Grapefruits & Arizona

In the basement of my office building there is a cafe. I occasionally stop there for breakfast, snack or lunch. Today I went down to get some ice water (of course free) and saw they had grapefuits cut in half. I haven't had a grapefruit in a long time but I do enjoy them, so I got one. I brought it to my desk, cut around each piece and put a little bit of sugar on it. I took my first bite and took a trip back in time. I always forget (until I eat one) how eating grapefruits remind me of Arizona, which is great on snowy days like today. My grandparents (dad's parents) lived in Arizona before my grandfather passed away. We would go down and visit every once in a while, usually in the winter time. My grandparents had a lot of different citrus fruit trees. I remember getting up early and watching my grandpa check his blood (he was diabetic) and we'd go outside and pick fruit while grandma made breakfast. Just simple moments that meant a lot, and I'm always reminded of it when I eat a grapefruit.

What a sweet story!

Grapefruits remind me of these special grapefruit spoons my grandmother used. When we'd visit her she would serve us grapefruits for breakfast and we'd get to use the special spoons. Those fruits were almost as bitter and unloving as she is.
