New Year's Goals

Dictionary.com states "resolution" as:
2. a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something
3. the act of resolving or determining upon an action or course of action, method, procedure, etc.
4. the mental state or quality of being resolved or resolut; firmness of purpose.

Wikipedia states:
A New Year's resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous.

A New Years resolution is a big thing. It isn't something that should just be thrown together at 11:58 p.m. on December 31. It's something you should think long and hard on. Something that you know you can accomplish with hard work and something that you will learn from. Something that will make you a better person. I know the past I'd come up with New Years resolutions that were huge goals that actually needed small steps to complete. Since I was only looking at the big picture, I became distraught and didn't complete the task. A lot of the time the pressure of "New Years Resolutions" is overwhelming and intimidating which also causes me not to complete them. I don't know if it's the title of it or what.

This year is going to be different. Instead of calling it "New Years Resolutions" I'm going to call it "New Year's Goals" or "2010 Goals". I want to have a list of things I'd like to accomlish or tasks I'd like to complete. I want to take small steps to complete them to ensure that I can and will complete them. Looking at the small steps rather than the big picture puts your mind at ease and gives you many "accomplished moments" rather than one big moment. Example: instead of saying I'd like to de-clutter my house, I can say I'd like to de-clutter my bedroom and take it one room at a time. Instead of saying, I'd like to lose 60 pounds, say I'd like to lose 10% of my weight. It is a smaller number and will be easier to accomplish if you're not starring at the 60 pounds number. Than after you've lost that 10% then go for 10% more! It's finding the little steps to lead you where you want to be.

Deciding on goals you want to accomplish isn't just a New Year's thing. I know many people have a list of goals that they know will take more than a year and have already started. I think that's great! If you don't already have a goal or goals, take this time to figure out what you want to do to better who you are or what you are doing with your life. (i.e. Steph and Rachael's 101 list)

I wish each of you a wonderful New Year and hope and pray with all my heart that it is a year full of love, friendship, family and wonderful joyous times.
